Rebecka Beetz - Violin
Born and raised in Germany, Rebecka took up the violin at age 6 and started playing in regional symphony orchestras at age 11. She won first prize at the German "Jugend musiziert" competition for violin at age 11 and for piano at age 16. While studying in Leipzig, she was a regular player in the "Akademisches Orchester", playing subscription concerts in the Gewandhaus, home of the world famous Gewandhausorchester. Rebecka moved to NZ in 2006 where she soon took up her musical interest again. Rebecka took over the position of concertmaster of Bay of Plenty Symphonia from Lucy in 2012 and also regularly plays for Opus Orchestra. When she doesn’t play her violin, she works as a freelance translator and looks after her two young daughters.
Lucy Gardiner - Violin
Lucy's hometown is Auckland where she spent several years as a member of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and enjoyed playing for numerous theatre productions, as well as regularly playing at weddings and other special events. Lucy has also worked as a session musician for contemporary NZ musicians/bands such as Parachute Band and Matt Bodman. After moving to Tauranga in 2007, she took up the role of concert master for the Bay of Plenty Symphonia but stood down from this responsibility in 2012 due to the impending birth of her twin boys. She also regularly plays for the Hamilton based Opus Orchestra.
Justus Rozemond - Viola
Justus is an all-round musician, who moved to Tauranga in 2012 to take up the position of Music Director of the Bay of Plenty Symphonia orchestra. He studied Music Performance at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington. As a conductor he has extensive experience in orchestral and choir conducting, including opera, with particular emphasis on contemporary music: he premiered many works by New Zealand composers, and is often heard on Radio New Zealand. As a player, his main specialty is the bass clarinet, but earlier in life he played the violin. For the Animato String quartet, he made the switch to the slightly larger viola.
Jillian Carey - Cello
Jillian has spent more than 30 years performing in orchestras and small groups as well as teaching her instrument. After learning piano as a young child, she took up the cello at age 14. She studied under private tutors in Wellington and completed a B.A. before studying cello at Auckland University. She has played in master classes, orchestras and chamber groups in both those cities but it was in Nelson where her teaching career took off when she moved there. She played in two orchestras in Nelson, the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and the Viva Chamber Orchestra. She is now enjoying a busy musical life in Tauranga where she performs in the Bay of Plenty Symphonia, Animato String Quartet and sings in the Scholars Pro Musica Choir.
